A Portrait of the Person book cover

A Portrait of the Person outlines a theory of personality that enables the clinician to directly relate his/her practice to the structure of the person. The person is a complex system of cognitions about the neurological system that underlies the self, the disturbances of the self, and the self's relationship to the world within which she/he lives. These cognitions emerge into awareness as the variety of self concepts used to relate to others, feelings, and personal reality. The restructuring of these cognitions is the task of psychotherapy.

This is a seminal work - and that is no exaggeration. “A Portrait of the Person” gets psychology on track as scientific study, carving to the roots of human personality. Dr. Gross makes sense of anomalous behaviors to such a degree that I was left marveling why so many others missed the obvious - except it isn’t obvious, of course. Freud, Jung, Harry Sullivan weren’t fools, but they were no Zoltan Gross either. You won’t find all the answers here, but you will discover a great many of them, more than in all the multi-volume tomes of legendary authorities combined. The elegant insight of Dr. Gross (that the mind behaves much like a tightrope walker) is a key that unlocks so much it left me feeling dazed. Bravo to Zoltan Gross—his name (and his genius) belongs at the top, with psychology’s founding fathers.

Dr. Gross has written a remarkable book. He presents an impressive new personality theory that is based on distinctly new conceptualizations that are relevant to our understanding of human behavior and the practice of psychotherapy. While most books discuss theories of personality in a somewhat familiar framework, this one is unique because Dr. Gross has evolved ideas with a depth that is beyond the usual boundaries. Reading this book is like being invited on an adventure of exploration to view previously unknown territories of psychology. Throughout the book, Dr. Gross discusses his own professional “journey” to discover various elements of his theory. He shares personal stories and case studies that illustrate how his ideas evolved. Therefore, the intellectual content of the book is beautifully balanced with a charming personal depiction of how a valid new theory emerges. This book is informative, important, and inspiring.
